JEWISH HISTORY
King Solomon is held in one of the highest regards in Judaism and spoke of often, however in this modern day many details are let out. For instance we know he had dreads from Queen Sheba herself and from a particular Shulamite Princess.
In the songs of Solomon a book that reveals the dialogue between King Solomon and a Shulamite princess, the princess makes repeated reference to King Solomon’s locks“behold, thou art fair, my love; thou hast doves’ eyes within thy LOCKS; thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from mount Gilead” “ thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely; thy temples are like a piece of pomegranate within thy LOCKS” SS 4:1 &3 “for my head is filled with dew, and my LOCKS with the drops of night” “his head is as the most fine gold, his LOCKS are bushy and black as a raven” SS 5:2 7 11Furthermore the Ganja element of Rastafari comes from Judaism and reverence of Solomon because “Ganja” was the first and only thing to grow on King Solomon’s grave!! (See Rastafari page for complete details)
And so to did Moses (for a time) Ezekiel, Samuel, Absalom to name but a few , the others for ease of understanding you can find them in the Christianity section of dreadlock history.
Drawings have shown dreadlocks on the Aztec’s, Germanic tribes, the Vikings, the Greeks, the Pacific Ocean peoples, the Naga people and several ascetic groups within various major religions have at times worn their hair in dreadlocks. In addition to the Nazarites of Judaism and the Sadhus of Hinduism, there are the Dervishes of Islam and the Coptic Monks of Christianity, among others.
AZTEC HISTORY
Dreadlocks also have been part of South American culture. In a description of an Aztec ritual, Historian William Hickling Prescott referred to dreadlocked Priests of the Aztec civilization, a Mesoamerican people of central Mexico in the 14th century, 15th century and 16th century. The golden half sun head-dresses they wore sat atop of the dreadlocks
"On the summit he was received by six priests, whose long and matted locks flowed disorderly over their sable robes, covered with hieroglyphic scrolls of mystic import. They led him to the sacrificial stone, a huge block of jasper, with its upper surface somewhat convex." (William H. Prescott, History of the Conquest of Mexico)
Pre-Columbian Aztec priests were described in Aztec codices (including the Durán Codex, the Codex Tudela and the Codex Mendoza) as wearing their hair untouched, allowing it to grow long and matted.
Samuel
“The lord uncovered the ear of Samuel; he gently brushed aside the nazarite locks covering his ear and communicated his thought to Samuel"
English Standard Version(©2001)
"He put out the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head, and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the gateway of the inner court that faces north, where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy"
DANIEL (DANIEL AND THE LIONS)
Daniel was fed to the lions because he refused to partake in the kings offering which Daniel deemed to be unclean food and of course wine, as he was as Nazarite he could not partake, this was seen as an insult and he was cast to the lions, but hence Daniel had dreadlocks.
ABSALOM If we look at the next verse that testifies about Absalom, we find this.
"And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight." ( 2 Sam 14:26)
Scottish & Celt History
Scottish Highlanders are also known for their dreadlocks, the most famous and noted of them all is “Braveheart” himself William Wallace
The Celts of northern Europe wore locks and Julius Caesar described them having "hair like snakes". It is believed by some that the Druids were the shamans and mystics of the Celts, like theyre Indian and African counterparts, and endowed with the knowledge of nature, the cosmos, and the gods. They were connected mysteriously to the rituals and possible formation of Stonehenge, like the God-Kings of Egypt and South America were to their pyramids. Dreadlocks had a mysterious connection to the ancient rites of the gods, as antennas receiving divine insight and revelation. This belief is still held by the majority of spiritual adepts who wear locks in such a way. There were Germanic tribes who wore locks, Greeks, Asian emperors in the 1400-1500s, Semitic peoples of early biblical history in ancient places like Canaan and Phoenicia, Magi and Zoroastrians, early Jewish-Christian sects like the Essenes, Nazarenes, and Ebonites, Pacific Island peoples, and the Naga Indians (also known as Serpent People). At the stage of renunciation in the life of the Buddha, he was said to have lived on a few hemp seeds a day and allowed his hair to grow long and lock up
